Childhood in the Netherlands, youth in Southern Germany and Hamburg. As a classical cellist, he participated in various youth orchestras and concert tours around Europe.

After his social service, he studies German and French literature and Media Culture at Tübingen, Paris and Hamburg universities (including a dissertation on the films of Krzysztof Kieslowski).

1998-2005 Directing Class at film school HFF „Konrad Wolf“ in Potsdam-Babelsberg near Berlin.
Graduation with the feature film PINPGONG, premiered in the Critics Week in Cannes 2006.

2001/02 Participant of the Atelier Ludwigsburg / Paris, a one-year training programme for budding European film producers.

Since 2006, as well as working on his own films as a writer and director, Matthias Luthardt has regularly taught at film schools and cultural institutions in Germany and abroad. Since 2015, he is part of the teaching staff at the English speaking Met Film School in Berlin.

He is represented by the agency ABOVE THE LINE and a member of the European Film Academy.
